pretty ruffle sleeve raglan tee sewing tutorial
Ok, so I was pretty sure I was going to hate this shirt the entire time I was sewing information technology. Ruffles on sleeves? What am I, a pirate? (Cue Jerry Seinfeld: I don't wanna exist a pirate!) But, y'all know, I've seen some bong sleeves and ruffled sleeves making their fashion back into stores and I call up they're actually kind of pretty, different many of the other lxx's inspired apparel that are apparently headed our way (why? non again!).
So I gave information technology a shot. I took my raglan tee pattern and added ruffled bell sleeves. Like I said, I was pretty skeptical while I was sewing this height – I'm not one of those skinny girls who look amazing in everything – just I secretly hoped I'd cease up liking it. And I practise. It's fun and a little romantic without beingness over the top. A pace upwards from my normal tee shirt without existence whatsoever less comfortable than a normal t-shirt.
This is a pretty elementary hack of my raglan tee blueprint. If yous oasis't sewn a raglan tee before, you'll need to read through that mail for the full instructions. So in this mail I'll bear witness y'all how to add the ruffle to the sleeves.
You lot're going to need 1.5 yards of lx inch wide knit (stretchy) fabric. Launder and dry out information technology before you lot brainstorm. Y'all will likewise demand my raglan tee design, which you tin can download by clicking here.
Print the pattern out at 100% or full size (the grey squares should measure exactly one inch). Don't trim the pages, but butt them together and record. The pattern volition await like this:
Cut out the shirt piece and the sleeve to the short sleeve mark. Normally when you use this pattern at the short sleeve length, you'll cut on the outside lines at the bottom of the sleeve. However, since nosotros are adding a ruffle, yous're going to cut along the inside lines (shown with an pointer below).
As directed in the blueprint, cut out two sleeve pieces and ii bodice pieces (bodice pieces on the fold). Yous'll likewise demand a neckbinding piece, which should be about 1.75 inches loftier and 28 inches long (stretch going along that length).
To add ruffles to the sleeves, you will besides demand ii ruffle pieces, each 5 inches high and 21 inches long (stretch going along the length). You can see all the pieces cut out in the photograph below:
Starting time by taking each ruffle piece. Hem one long edge past turning up 1/ii an inch and sewing (I used a double needle for all my hems on knit fabrics). Then stitch 2 rows of gathering stitches along the other long border. A gathering stitch is a run up with a long stitch length and a depression tension.
Pull on the bobbin threads of the gathering stitches to assemble up the ruffle until it is the same width equally the bottom of the sleeve piece:
Evenly distribute the gathers. Then place the ruffle piece down on the sleeve slice, matching the ruffles to the bottom edge of the sleeve, with right sides together.
Pin and run up, using a sew that will stretch – zig zag, serger stitch, stretch run up – (1st photo below). Then flip the ruffle downward and press (2nd photo below).
At present your sleeve pieces are prepare to go and you tin stitch upward the shirt as explained in the original raglan tee mail.
